1. Keep away from heat and strong magnets
A magnetised hairspring runs noticeably fast. Keep speakers, magnetic phone mounts and security scanners at a distance.
2. Clean the strap regularly
Leather dislikes sweat; steel dislikes salt. Wipe the watch with a dry cloth after summer wear and have leather straps serviced twice a year.
3. Never operate the crown underwater
Check that the crown is fully back before setting the time or winding; screw-down crowns must be tightened.
4. Book a service every three to five years
A mechanical movement needs cleaning and fresh lubrication. Follow the recommended interval.
5. Wind watches you do not wear
Run the movement once a month so the oils do not settle.
6. Avoid hard knocks
Shock protection has limits. Take the watch off for contact sport.
7. Keep the service card and serial
Service and resale both depend on complete paperwork. Store it safely.
